One of the oldest forms of holistic medicine in the world, Ayurveda has become a trusted form of treatment all over the world. Assumed to have originated in India, it has now spread all over the earth. It has been practiced for more than 3000 years, and millions of people in the world benefit greatly from it. The basic tenet of Ayurveda is to prevent and treat illness rather than to respond to the symptoms of a disease. This is achieved by maintaining harmony between mind, body, and the environment.

Although it originated in the east, it is well suited for people of all lifestyles and societies. The World Health Organization endorses Ayurveda as a bona fide traditional system of health care. In Australia as well, the Government has recognized Ayurveda as a complementary medicine and thus is required to meet the same regulatory standards as western medicines. Since healthcare costs are increasing, people are choosing Ayurveda due to its well-established benefits.

Benefits of Ayurvedic Treatment

Sometimes we feel unwell, but we are not diagnosed with any illness when we go to the doctor. What truly happens inside the body is an imbalance that has not manifested into a diagnosable disease. Yet, it is enough to make us uncomfortable. Ayurveda aims to prevent the onset of any disease. Practitioners offering Ayurveda treatment in Melbourne has found many benefits during their extensive study –

  • Ayurveda as a system focuses on improving the immunity of the person. Unlike western medicine, Ayurveda views each person as an individual, not a generic group.
  • It prevents the occurrence of disease pathology. It aims to heal the root of an illness and not simply treat the symptoms.
  • Ayurveda is also known to improve digestive capacity and nourish the nervous system. People have found it to be an effective remedy against stress and anxiety and help them sleep better.
  • Ayurveda is also known to reduce dependence on pharmaceutical medicine. There are also no known side effects of Ayurvedic treatment and use therapeutic methods that are completely natural.
  • Unlike western medicine, it is a lifestyle that prevents people from sickness. It is a complete system of healing that treats almost all known forms of diseases through preventive, curative, and detoxification methods.
  • It helps maintain homeostasis of the body functions and promotes the well-being of an individual. It promotes skin quality, improves appetite, and strengthens bones, nails, and hair.
  • Diet is always part of the treatment, and the regime is specially curated, keeping each person in mind based on their body constitution and condition.
  • Ayurveda is an extremely cost-effective system of medicine. Since it focuses more on the preventive rather than the curative aspect of a disease, it focuses on changing lifestyle and diet to avoid diseases. And the fee is paid only for consultation and rarely for the medicinal preparations, so the cost of treatment significantly goes down.

Basic Philosophies of Ayurveda

Ayurveda is a comprehensive system of medicine that combines natural therapy and a highly personalized approach to maintaining the health of the individual and the treatment of diseases. Ayurveda considers humans, just as nature, to be made of five elements – ether (space), air, fire, water, and earth. The presence of these five elements in the environment affects us. Certain elements are known to combine and create physiological functions. These combinations are known as Doshas, and a balance of three doshas is understood to be essential for optimal health.

  • Vata Dosha– It is a combination of Ether and Air. It governs the source of movement and directs nerves, circulation, respiration, and excretion. When in balance, it promotes creativity and vitality and generates anxiety, fear, and pain when unbalanced.
  • Pitta Dosha –Fire and Water combine to form this dosha. It is the process of transformation or metabolism, including cellular metabolism. It controls digestion, nutrient absorption, and temperature. Contentment and intelligence are promoted when pitta dosha is in balance and imbalance causes ulcers provokes anger, hate, and jealousy.
  • Kapha Dosha – Water and Earth combine to make Kapha dosha. It shoulders the responsibility of ensuring the growth of the body. It maintains the immune system and moisture content in the body.Cerebral-spinal fluid and mucosal lining in the stomach are a form of Kapha. The emotions controlled by Kapha are love and forgiveness, and an imbalance is known to generate insecurity and envy.

The ratios of the three doshas are different in each individual, and hence, Ayurveda views each individual as diverse. It is believed that each individual has a distinctive pattern of energy which is a combination of physical, mental, and emotional features of the individual. It is also believed that one or two doshas of the three are always dominant in a person.

Charaka Samhita identifies Ayurveda as the “knowledge that indicates the appropriate and inappropriate, happy and sad states of life, auspicious and inauspicious moments for longevity, along with the measure of life.” To know more about ayurvedic science, contact an Ayurveda practitioner in Melbourne.
