Denny’s offers lots of great-tasting food, especially the classic diner fare we all know and love. But then there are the menu items you just have to avoid, because they don’t taste as great as you’d like. Choose whatever strikes your fancy from the menu, but you’ll do yourself a favor if you avoid the following items:
Plenty of diners and other fast-food joints feature chicken tenders, because in general they’re just yummy. It’s actually a bit difficult to get this order wrong. All the diner has to do is to make the outside breading appropriately crispy, while the meat inside is soft and juicy. Add some dipping sauce and a side of fries, and everything’s alright.
That’s basically what you get at Denny’s when you order the chicken tenders. It’s not bad at all. Even the overly picky kids won’t complain about it.
So, why should you not order the chicken tenders at Denny’s? It’s because it was almost intentionally designed so that no one will hate it. And that’s not always a good thing. In other words, it’s just boring. You simply end up with blah chicken tenders that doesn’t really taste like anything good without the dipping sauce.
The point is that if you’re looking for good chicken tenders, go somewhere else. Denny’s is not the place where they particularly give a hoot about the quality of their chicken. Just visit a place where you know chicken is their main priority, and in all likelihood the chicken tenders will be a whole lot better.
You’ve got the T-bone steak, rump steak, and the sirloin steak & shrimp. There’s even a country-fried steak. You look at the pictures in the menu and the alluring text describing these dishes, and they all seem great.
But here’s the deal. Denny’s is a diner. That means they specialize in breakfast food and other classic fares that are basically hard to mess. You see the 1 pancake is only 2 dollars, and you’ll get your money’s worth. But that’s not true with the steak dishes.
The thing is, Denny’s is not a steakhouse. It’s not a restaurant with a deep connection to steaks. They don’t really care much about it. And that’s the problem. Chances are that if you order a steak here, then you’ll get steak that’s worse than any steak you can get at an actual steakhouse.
Cinnamon Roll Pancake Breakfast
Denny’s is a great place for breakfast, or for any food craving at any time. They serve reliably good traditional breakfast fare that you’ll appreciate. What’s more, you have plenty of customization options so you get precisely the ingredients you want in your food.
But then there’s this Cinnamon Roll Pancake Breakfast. It might be an option for those who are particularly looking for something sweet to start the day. In most cases, that means you might get yourself some sweet croissants. A pancake is a good option too.
Here you get 2 pancakes, along with 2 eggs, hash browns, and either 2 strips of bacon or 2 sausage links.
But the problem here is that this is simply too sweet. The sweetness level goes way beyond moderate and enters a zone that’s just unreasonable. This also comes with 2 buttermilk pancakes that’s been cooked with extremely sweet cinnamon crumb topping. Then it’s topped with whipped cream and cream cheese icing, if the sugar level isn’t already making you sick.
The sugar level in this option is just outrageous, especially considering the serving size. This seems like one of those dishes that explain the popularity behind the low-carb, low-sugar diet.
Santa Fe Sizzlin’ Skillet
Denny’s has lots of Sizzlin’ Skillets options for both breakfast and dinner. Among the breakfast skillets, there’s the Santa Fe Sizzlin’ Skillet. It features crumbled chorizo sausage accompanied by mushrooms, fire-roasted onions and bell peppers, seasoned red-skinned potatoes, and grape tomatoes. Cheddar cheese and 2 eggs top everything off.
On the face of it, the somewhat Mexican-Southwestern vibe of this option seems really appetizing. The chorizo gives you a meat option that’s not all that common, and then you even get plenty of healthy veggies.
But the truth is, the whole thing is rather boring. True, the chorizo does taste great, and it’s not exactly something you get to order at any other fast-food joints. But that’s about it.
This order seems to come with too large a portion of potatoes, and the remaining veggies taste bland. And while the veggies are nicely fresh, the somewhat substandard cheese doesn’t seem to fit in. It’s just a distraction.
In other words, Denny’s doesn’t actually specialize in Mexican-Southwestern dishes, and it’s obvious if you try this Santa Fe Sizzlin’ Skillet. You might give them points for effort, but in the end, it fails. This is not the kind of dish you’d want to order at Denny’s, because other places (which do focus on Mexican-Southwestern dishes) do it a lot better.
There’s always a chance that your taste buds are a lot different than ours. It’s entirely possible that you might actually like the menu items we listed here. Try them for yourself if you’re not sure. Just don’t say we didn’t warn you!
