On the off chance if you don’t want your personal information to be hacked, then go through the 5 effective ways mentioned in this article and know how to secure your Netgear extender WiFi in minutes. So, without further ado, let’s get started, shall we?

5 Proven Ways to Secure Your Netgear Extender WiFi

  1. Update the Extender’s Firmware

Start securing your Netgear extender WiFi by updating its firmware. Updating the firmware of your Netgear WiFi range extender to the latest version ensures that the device works smoothly. Thus, keep the firmware of your Netgear extender up-to-date.

Outlined below are the guidelines that you need to follow in order to update the firmware of your Netgear extender without any hassle:

  • Power on your Netgear extender and connect it to the router using an Ethernet source. If you are planning to connect your devices wirelessly for updating extender’s firmware, then it is recommended to drop the idea. The reason being, wireless source is not as secure as Ethernet. That is why, it is recommend to connect your device using an Ethernet cable, be it doing Netgear WiFi extender setup or updating the firmware.
  • Then, switch on a PC or laptop, and launch a web browser of your choice.
  • Log in to your extender using www.mywifiext.net web or 192.168.1.250 IP address.
  • Enter the model number of your extender and select the Settings > Firmware Update option.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions.

Bonus: You can also update the firmware of your Netgear WiFi extender using the Nighthawk app. For assistance regarding the same, feel free to drop your queries into the comments section.

  1. Change the Extender’s Default Login Credentials

Another effective measure that you can do to secure your Netgear extender’s WiFi is to change its default login credentials. Bear in mind that changing the default login details of your Netgear WiFi range extender will make it difficult for hackers to steal your bandwidth and your personal data.

To change the Netgear extender admin details, log in to your device using www.mywifiext.net web address and follow the instructions provided on-screen.

Bonus: It is also advised to change the default log in details of your main router as well. If you own a Netgear router, then you can simply change the default password by navigating to the routerlogin.net setup wizard. And, if you have a router of any other brand, simply contact your service provider for the same.

  1. Hide the Extender’s SSID

Do relatives and friends often visit your home? If you nod in yes, then we advise you to create a separate network for them. The reason being, you can never deny to share your WiFi password with them, isn’t it? So, it’s better to provide a separate network to them. Doing so will somehow help you secure your Netgear extender WiFi.

Note: No matter you have enabled the guest access feature. You never know – your relative and friends can also be back stabbers. So, it is highly recommended to change the password of your Netgear extender frequently, especially after sharing it.

  1. Disable Remote Access

Another common yet major reason why your Netgear extender WiFi can be hacked because of the enabled remote access feature. Yes, the feature (when enabled) can allow anyone to access your extender’s WiFi from anywhere. Therefore, after doing Netgear WiFi extender setup, it is suggested to disable the remote access feature of your device.
